GIVEAWAY: changing gears by greg foyster

Today's giveaway is a copy of 'Changing Gears', written by Greg Foyster, published by Affirm Press.

Changing Gears shares Greg and his girlfriend Sophie's cycling journey from Hobart to Cairns. As in, they had two bicycles and an Aldi tent. (Is anyone else feeling chaffed just thinking about it?)

Throughout the journey, Greg interviewed a range of people who live sustainably and simply, from a barefoot monk, to an 18th century woodsman, to a household that lived without any electricity for 20 years. What is most exciting for me is the idea that there isn't just one way to live sustainably and simply. I think people generally consider simple living to be limiting, when in fact, the running theme from Greg's interviews is that it is life enriching.

Greg managed to communicate ideas that were challenging, without having those ideas feel overwhelming or out of reach. Perhaps what challenged me most was the idea of merchandising our needs. A simple example of this is the need to clean ourselves, and the products we've created to do that (shower, shower gel, shampoo, soap, exfoliant, shower caddy, flannel….). I'm re-shifting my thinking in what I 'need' to stay clean.

I appreciated Greg's humour and honesty, and despite the fact that I struggle on anything with less than wheels (in fact, I can't even roller-skate)  found it very relatable. It helped that Greg shared the 'der' moments as well as the 'aha' ones.

Changing Gears is one of those books that I can't wait to read again.

Click here to buy a copy for yourself (get two and give one for a friend… they're currently 20% off, at only $19.95!).
