dining space update: the pine cabinet gets a paint job

Recently, I shared a pic of our now complete trestle dining table, and I'm back with another installment of "let's-do-something-about-this-dining-space-before-I-kill-someone".

Paint is a quick and easy way to bring new life to old furniture, making the most of items which otherwise may prematurely wind up as waste. Like many Gen Y's, I grew up surrounded by pine furniture, and although the classic "oranged-out" varnish is kind of nostalgic, it's not really my thing. After finishing the dining table, I became determined to paint the pine cabinet from my childhood for some contrast in the space. Here's a quick reminder of what it looked like after the table had been finished:

I gave the cabinet a couple of coats of the remaining "blue ink" paint from the recently painted wood panel wall (click here to see how the colour looks in a different room with change of lighting conditions). Here's what it looks like now:

In the words of Icona Pop, I love it.

And while I'm at it... Doesn't the crochet light cover look adorable in the above pic? I love the unintentional colour coordination!

There's just one job left to do: Replace the knobs (which is why all the doors and drawers are slightly open in this pic- I've refused to put the old ones back on). I'm thinking mismatched vintage glass knobs, so will be keeping my eyes peeled on Gumtree and eBay!

Down the road, I'll likely stick a vintage wallpaper along the back to peek out from the goodies behind the glass doors, but I'm going to wait until the wallpaper comes to me to avoid months of rushed vintage store visits and unsatisfied sighs. Be the moth, not the flame...

Have you ever painted over wood? Did you regret it or was it exactly what you dreamed?

  1. Oh Kate, the cabinet is fabulous! Before I read about the vintage glass door handles I was already there. I got some in Melbourne from a pop up shop and need more!

  3. Just my opinion, but don't over do it with the wallpaper especially with feature handles on the way. Looks perfect as is.

Oh, and the light shade is AMAZING!

    1. After sitting with the cabinet for a couple of weeks now, I have to COMPLETELY agree with you! I've found some cute knobs, but they've got a pattern on them, and a wallpaper would be OTT!
