human rights meditations: an introduction

via my Flickr photostream

Living in a country where most of us have more than what we need or want, we often take human rights for granted. The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights can seem like something that just isn’t relevant to us, and is more for those in developing countries. This could not be further from the truth. Not only do many people in Australia and other “well off” countries experience human rights violations (gay marriage is just one example) but our day-to-day actions impact on other’s experiences, by participating in human rights violations and, on the other side of the coin, upholding them.

I’m going to spend the next 30 weeks walking you through each right identified in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. We’ll share our experiences and thoughts as we go along and talk about how these rights relate back to us.

This series isn’t intended to be an onerous process, but one that stimulates thinking and discussion. My aim is that you’ll see just how relevant human rights are to you and how you can make changes in your life to live more ethically and uphold the rights we are all entitled to.

I’ll be posting about individual rights in the Declaration weekly, starting tomorrow.

You can use the following hash tag when you’re on twitter and sharing your thoughts on the series and your learning: #hrmlak
