What's your next adventurous journey?

As part of my job I'm coordinating a program that offers young people the opportunity to complete their Duke of Ed Award. Today I was going through the information about the award and came across something that- although read several times before- struck me.

As part of this award, young people go on an adventurous journey. This can either be exploration based, (where they immerse themselves in an issue through research, consultations and play) or experience based (where they spend their time on a new and challenging experience, generally this is bush walking, kayaking etc).

This question occurred to me: When was the last time I went on an adventurous journey?

My last big adventure started three years ago, when Kym and I bought our home. That was a leap. A big one. With our young love we made a commitment to one another (and our bank) that was deeper than my twenty-two year old self could really understand. This is a journey that has been coloured with home cooking, plan-making, nerves and patience. What have we explored? The nature of love. What have we learnt? That love perseveres, that love is constant, that love doesn't pay the bills, that love holds you up in your darkest moments.

Sometimes people ask me if I regret taking that leap so young. I never have. I haven't regretted anything I have done, because I fully believe in the art of "giving it a go". I have, however, regretted the things that I haven't done. I regret not pursuing my passions for fear of failure and I regret not standing up for what I believe in for fear of embarrassment.

Today I remembered that every day I have a choice to make. This is a choice between 1) living a drowsy life, just getting through the day, and 2) taking the hand of my next adventurous journey, and trusting that life will lead me in the right direction.

What's your next adventurous journey?

I can definitely relate to this.

You're still on that [home ownership] journey btw with your blackboard painted doors, solar power, and garden beds... its a long one! :p

I am going to share this with my man.. he's feeling a bit 'drowsy' himself these days. Hopefully your words will inspire him.

  2. Thanks for sharing Janeen. And for the encouragement! Yes, Kym and I are still very much on the home owning journey. I think, really, it's a journey of adulthood. Grown-up-ness. When I became a grown up I don't know, but becoming more of who we are, while maintaining our responsibilities is a huge adventure for all of us.

Funnily enough, one of my new favourite songs says this:
"Don't you worry there my honey. We might not have any money, but we've got our love to pay the bills." (You and I - Ingrid Michaelson)

Sure, we all know the harsh reality is that we can't pay our bills with a bucket-o-love. But I think when you doing what you love, with the ones you love, it doesn't matter so much what you do and don't have and what you can and can't pay.
